Location

A new identity for Broome Senior High School and a ‘lantern’ for the Broome community.
The new two-storey teaching block provides a bold presence to the streetscape and contributes valuable social space for the students, while addressing the climatic issues relating to the rain, heat, humidity common to the Northwest.
Using concrete blockwork to tie in with the existing buildings on site, a lightweight first floor structure sits beneath an oversized parasol roof and makes a striking new statement along Frederick Street.
A vibrantly coloured perforated and folded aluminium screen wraps the Northern and Eastern facades, which not only provides necessary solar protection to the building, but also gives life to a dynamic artwork in the form of a custom perforation pattern influenced and contributed to by the local community - as well as a dynamic backlighting system that illuminates the building as a beacon for the community.
The new buildings are complemented by an extensive landscaping program, designed by Carrier & Postmus, which connects new with the old and dramatically improves the student experience through a consistent approach to materials, plant selection and a considered spatial quality of gathering spaces.
